"The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not
made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or
women created for men." ~Alice Walker (author of The Color Purple)
Would you like to volunteer to help at the Thrift Store?
Help is always needed and there are several areas which might appeal to you. Some folks
like to help on days when donations are collected from our storage area. The day includes
picking up, sorting, cleaning and pricing. It's a long day sometimes but a lot gets
accomplished!
There are always places open for anyone who would enjoy the selling end of the business
and our coordinator tries to keep hours as flexible as possible. Needless to say there are
plenty of opportunities for doing a bit of dusting, polishing or creating displays too. Things
look and sell better when they are clean and orderly.
For more information you can call Dick Langton at 715-634-2426 or email us by clicking
here.
Volunteer forms may be picked up at the shelter.
A Thrift Store Volunteer's Picnic. All work and no play is
NOT a Northwoods Humane Society motto! Here, a few
of the Our Pet Project Thrift Store crew relax and enjoy a
picnic luncheon. Wonder if they're talking "shop"?
Meet Cory
Who woke me up?
This is Cory Nelson at home in 1996. Typical of unwanted, abandoned and neglected dogs,
Cory seems to have a huge appreciation for his change in circumstances. It's hard to know
what goes through a dog's mind but we see it time and again. There's an initial period of
great insecurity and understandably so. But with time and consistent routines animals start
to loose their fear and wonderful personalities emerge. As any dog owner knows, dogs are
funny! They have senses of humor, they can feel embarrassed, they worry, they connive, and
because they watch our every move, they read us like books!
This indicates intelligence does it not? Making a dog a true part of your family is a special
experience. Dogs who spend their lives tied in back yards, confined to outdoor runs....no
matter how large and comfortable, or left just to roam at will can never participate, as Cory
does, as a family member. Dogs are dogs and cats are cats and humans are humans. But
that doesn't stop us from living together in warm, loving family groups with all the exchanges
that make relationships so unique.
Our thanks to all of you who have made room in your lives for one of our animals.
Can we PLEASE take a walk?
