"We should remember in our dealings with animals that they are a sacred
trust to us from our heavenly Father. They are dumb and cannot speak for
themselves."
--Harriet Beecher Stowe
Volunteering at the Shelter
Adult volunteers are a very important part of NHS. Shelter volunteers help with socializing
dogs and cats, serve in the office, clean cat cages, groom, help with cleaning and
maintenance both indoors and out. There are also opportunities at our Thrift Store and at one
of our many fund raising events. Applications may be picked up at the shelter.
Junior volunteers are between the ages of 12 (or graduated from sixth grade) and 18 years
old. Again, volunteer forms may be picked up at the locations above.
Dog walking on our groomed trails is a wonderful way to get some exercise yourself as well
as socialize a dog. We have 80 beautiful acres to experience our wonderful Northwoods
outdoors.
If office duty sounds more in your line there's always plenty to do. It helps if you can commit to
set days as there is a bit to learn so it helps get you in the swing of things quickly. We have
lots of data to be entered into our computer also if that sounds like fun.
Cuddles are so important and especially if you have to have your first bath! This little guy
feels so nice and clean and proud! Loving handlers make all the difference and the time they
spend with the dogs and cats makes each animal feel special and valued.
More cuddles. There are just never too many! Socializing of both adult animals and juveniles
is one of the important steps to making that animal feel secure enough to move on to it's
permanent home. Many hours every week are devoted to just this activity.
