"If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter
of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their
fellow men..." ~ St. Francis of Assisi

Why You Should Adopt From NHS

All dogs and cats are spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter, including kittens and
puppies. Each is vaccinated for rabies and distemper/parvo, wormed, bathed and
temperament tested. The shelter staff learns each pet’s personality and is able to give
experienced advice regarding the best home environment suitable for each, as well as
feeding, training and medical care. The NHS is always available for advice and any
concerns the new family may have. The adoption fee is very reasonable and far less than
it would cost an individual to provide these services for a pet obtained elsewhere. As well,
the shelter houses dogs and cats of all ages, sizes, colors and personalities who are in
great need of a permanent home.  There are purebreds and mixes, long hair, short hair,
active, quiet, very large to very small, young puppies and kittens to mature animals. Come
for a visit, put a personality to those photos in the newspaper, become one of the happy
homes who share their wonderful stories of their adopted friends, feel the glow of
knowing you have given a second chance to an abandoned pet. If you do, you will discover
you are the one who was given the greater gift.

The Story of Two Lucky Dogs

Shown here at the moment of their first reunion, this brother and sister have quite a story to
tell. They came to the shelter as 1/2 grown pups and shared a kennel and day to day life with
us for several months. Eventually the female was adopted and left to start her new life with a
loving owner. Her brother stayed behind for awhile and was eventually adopted also and left
with his new family.

A few months later the man who had adopted the female passed away unexpectedly and she
had to come back to the shelter to begin the process of finding the perfect new home. She
was like so many dogs and cats who come to us after knowing the joy of living in a home
where they are truly loved. She was having a very hard time in spite of our staff's efforts to
make her feel at home. She'd lost her friend and lost her home. Who wouldn't feel sad?

Now, our shelter manager is a very resourceful young lady and she isn't above using
whatever means necessary to see that her animals are taken care of. She just could not
watch this poor dog mourn forever so she called the family who'd adopted the brother and,
using all her powers of persuasion, got them to agree to visit the shelter and bring the dog
along.

She was, of course, hoping that they'd consider another adoption and also that the visit might
cheer the poor female up a bit. No one could have been prepared for what happened. The
dogs took one long look at each other and pandemonium broke out. They obviously
remembered each other and were overjoyed! It was an amazing reunion with the family of the
male looking on knowing they were being coerced just a bit. In the end they laughed and
decided there was just no way they could leave her behind. Actually it's all worked out just
fine. When the family has a busy schedule and has to be on the go the brother and sister
have each other again. If any one thinks animals don't remember things they should have
seen that reunion!
