Bandanas

Don't I look handsome?Bandanas, in our signature
neon pink, were one of our first fundraising items and
continue to be extremely popular with both dogs and
their people. We've yet to see a dog who doesn't look
good sporting one of these and they all turn out
dressed to the nines for our dog "events" such as the annual Walk For
Pets.

The bandanas measure a generous 20" square and are all cotton.

I hope Fluffy thinks I look good! Here's a fashion hint...
if you have a little dog the bandana can be cut in half from
corner to corner for a better fit. They sell for $4.00 each.
They are available at the shelter and at all NHS events
during the year.

Member Designed Notecards

Assorted images...boxes of 10
We are so proud of these beautiful note cards and you've probably already noticed, we
have used a few as backgrounds for our web site. They are the work of one of our
long-standing members whose talents are many. She has operated her own wonderful
boarding kennel, been a professional groomer and recently was one of our volunteer
office staff. Her love for all animals shows clearly in these beautiful drawings. Each box
contains an assortment of ten. The box sells for $7.00.

Molly's Story
                     Written by her new family

It was November of 1996 in our home some 400 miles from Hayward. We read the Sawyer
County Record and noticed particularly the photo and description of one of the dogs featured
in the Northwoods Humane Society Pets of the Week section --
"AUSTIN is a very scared 11 month old Dalmatian. She needs a gentle person to restore her
faith in humanity. When she gets to know you she is very loving."

We always looked at the Humane Society listings, our hearts going out to all the homeless
animals. Somehow, Austin tugged at us in a special way. We couldn't get her out of our minds.
We decided we'd have to stop and see her during the holidays, when we made our annual
winter trip up north.

After talking with us and determining whether or not we'd be a suitable family for Austin,
Alecia, the shelter manager, introduced us to her. With her body very low to the ground, she
inched her way toward my husband, me and my mom who had made the trip with us. She
was very cautious but seemed to know we meant her no harm. It didn't take us long to be
certain we wanted to take her home.
She was a trooper on the long ride home. She curled up and was quite calm. We thought that
somehow she knew she'd been transferred from one group of people who loved her
(Northwoods Humane Society) to another (our family). We wanted her to have a fresh start, so
we chose a new name for her as we drove.

When we got to our door, MOLLY ran into the family
room and jumped up on the couch. We were home! It
was love at first sight for all of us! Molly settled right in,
and we loved her with all of our hearts. Understandably,
she was very leery of anyone she didn't know. We
thought that enrolling her in a basic obedience class
would be good for her, both for training and for socializing her to people and to other dogs.

She loved her class and got so excited in the car each week as we approached the building
where it was held. She wanted to visit with other dogs, and it became clear that people who
were at the other end of a leash were much higher on her list than those who weren't! She was
a good learner too. (Occasionally, we people needed a little extra guidance from the
instructor, but in the end we passed too!!)

The four years Molly's been with us have flown by. She fills our lives with joy each day. She
loves walks and belly rubs and just being wherever we are. She's a power chewer and has a
whole bunch of the heaviest duty chew toys on the market. When she's in a feisty mood, she
runs like the wind in her fenced-in back yard, tucking her bottom under and doing her best
imitation of a greyhound.

Whenever we're in Hayward, we stop in at N.H.S. to visit Alecia and all the other wonderful,
caring people there. Molly definitely remembers her first loving family! Without their
understanding, patience, hard work and devotion, Molly would not have had the opportunity to
have the life that every pet deserves.

Sincerely, Ron and Jane Klimcke
