"Cats seem to go on the principle that it never does any harm to ask for
what you want." --Joseph Wood Krutch

A Very Few Of Our Alumni Cats

Samantha has been caught right in the act! She's stealing someone's sock again. Her
family says it's her one big fault and they have so much fun trying to thwart her raids that
it really isn't much of a fault! She doesn't damage the socks...just hides them!
Samantha had the misfortune to come into our shelter in a year that was rich in orange
tabby colored cats and kittens. In fact the shelter joke was that if we could ever get our
hands on the orange Tom cat who was responsible we had a standing vet appointment to
have him neutered!
We heard it again and again...."Don't you have any other colors?" One by one our kitties
found homes but by that time Samantha had been with us for a very long time. She had
invented her own game and it wasn't doing anything to get her adopted. She would lurk on
the very top of a bank of cages and jump down on anyone coming into the catroom. She
didn't bother with staff....they were no fun. She liked an unsuspecting family. She got a
much bigger reaction form someone caught completely off guard!
The day finally rolled around when one of our staff members just couldn't watch this go
on for another moment. Like so many animal lovers, she had vowed she had a big enough
family and could not adopt again. Well, she gave in and Samantha was formally adopted
and went home to live with this woman who was already her good friend.
We suspect that this happens in shelters everywhere in some form. Every now and then
there seems to be one perfectly delightful cat or dog that gets passed over for no reason
anyone can account for. It's always a great day when these particular creatures find their
own special home.

Nancy and her sister came to us as two very pretty little kittens. They were also severely
malnourished and Emily had a deformed hind leg. It appeared to be a birth defect and
she'd learned to walk and even run with only the partial use of that limb.
With a new diet and good care both sisters soon blossomed into healthy happy young
cats. You just never know who is going to bond with whom in this world. A family came to
adopt one day and fell in love with Emily and she with them. Three days later Emily left to
begin her new life.
A few weeks later a family came in who had visited our shelter often. They had spent
hours playing with the cats on many occasions but had not thought of adopting. They
were from Canada and already had pets at home. But, as sometimes happens, Nancy
"got to them". They had met both of the sisters on a previous visit and were just thrilled to
see how much progress Nancy had made and that Emily had found such a great home.
They held more than one family conference and decided that Nancy would become a
Canadian.
She now lives in Ontario and she's just as silly as ever. She'll gladly wear a big blue bow
on her head and be the center of attention.....she knows only too well that life can be very
rough when you have to fend for yourself!

Interrupted from his nap, Sweet Pea claims this laundry basket as his own and woe to
anyone who dares try to sleep in it (or completely empty it for that matter)! He's one of our
shelter manager's cats, rescued as part of an abandoned litter long before she even
dreamed of making this work a career! His littermates all found homes but we think
Sweet Pea was probably the luckiest of all! He got to stay with his new found friend and
his precious laundry basket. He has cat friends too but when he wants a quiet moment to
himself this is where you'll find him!
