"Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or
discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be
back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace." ~
Milan Kundera

                                    Dog Walkers

Ready, Set....Let's GO! One of the very important
contributions made by some of our great adult
volunteers is acting as a dog-walker! The dogs just
LOVE this and it gives them one-on-one time to explore
our beautiful trails with a loving human. For some of
these dogs this is their first experience of having a
human buddy.

It also serves another purpose. Most homeless dogs know nothing of walking on a
lead so, with the guidance of our trainer, they start to learn some of the fundamentals
of being a good canine citizen. If a large dog drags a prospective new owner down the
road face down through a few mud puddles it does nothing to win him that new home!
Dogs need to learn just like we all do and we don't want them to miss out on one of the
real joys of being an owned animal. Taking a long, pleasant walk is one of the very best
parts of the dog-man relationship.

Hey...it's only 10 below...lets GO! This very special man is a real
trooper and has made a difference in countless lives! He appears
at the shelter every Monday and the staff can set their watches
by his arrival. He's there to walk dogs and if it happens to be
raining or snowing or blowing....well, so what! He's there to walk
dogs and nothing is going to stop him! Without people like this
there is no way our small staff could find the hours it takes to give
our charges this kind of attention and fun.

What are the rewards? Well, when you see that first dog leave to start a new life with a
loving family there is no question about reward. Yes, it can be a little hard if you've
spent a lot of time with that dog but it's also what makes this part of our volunteer
program so important. Folks set aside their own feelings to help a fellow critter and we
can never thank them enough.

The Northwoods Humane Society Shelter is located East of Hayward on Hwy. 77 at
O'Brien Hill Road.

Our mowed walking trails wind through magnificent rolling fields. If you have been
promising yourself you'd get out and walk more this is a great way to do it! Take a
"new friend" along and enjoy the sights and sounds. We do have beautiful days in
Northern Wisconsin in spite of that first picture !

You'll feel better and so will the dog you take along exploring.
