"I wonder what goes through his mind when he sees us peeing in his water
bowl."

                                     Donation Houses

All around Hayward, at various supportive businesses,
you'll see our cute little donation houses. They were
made by a volunteer and, of course, painted by one of
our talented members. A member couple makes the
rounds on a regular schedule to the stores, resorts and
restaurants who are nice enough to place these on their
counters. It's one more way we work to keep our shelter
up and running.

Peaches the Guinea Pig as written by his new family.
Peaches was surrendered in the summer of 2000, along with another male guinea pig, by
a family that had originally inherited four pigs. Two had already died and another male
died just after being surrendered, leaving this little guy. I was present when the two pigs
were brought in. Peaches was very thin and totally afraid, hiding under a small overturned
cardboard box in his cage.
Once our family adopted Peaches it took him about 24 hours to figure out that the
refrigerator door opens, a plastic bag rustles and voila! Pig food magically appears. Now,
at exactly 5:00 AM he loudly squeals for his special pig treats such as greens, carrots,
apples, oranges, clover hay and gourmet guinea pig food.
Peaches rapidly overcame his fears, gained weight, and has actually grown to like his
contacts with our dogs and cats. Our youngest cat, Violette, will roll over on her back and
reach out to touch him very gently. Peaches thinks this is interesting behavior although
we're somewhat skeptical of her motives. Peaches also likes to sit in his "Dad's" lap and
watch Monday Night Football.....especially if the Green Bay Packers are playing!
Peaches is a welcome addition, bringing his exuberant pig behavior and boundless
curiosity into our mix of animals. Ounce for ounce he's by far the loudest squealing pig
we've ever had!
