"If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter
of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their
fellow men..." ~ St. Francis of Assisi

The Help Save A Pet Super Raffle will raise approximately $18,000.
This was the strongest raffle we have had in several years! The
planning committee included Alecia Austin our Shelter Manager
and members Sis Hale, Chris Manahan and Mary Gustafson. There
was a great supporting crew of ticket sellers which included
Nancy Iverson, Max Hintler, Joann Evans, Ron and Marlene
Wegener, Bob Schroeder, Larry Johnson, Carol Clifford, Bonnie
Larson, Brue Weiland, Sara Curtis, Kim and Kyle Kral, Ray Austin,
Pam Warner, Joan Cervenka, Dory Schreiner and Jackie and Ivan
Uttech. They sold raffle tickets at Spring Fling in Winter, The Stone
Lake Garage Sale, the 17th Annual Craft Fair in Stone Lake, the
60th Annual Musky Festival, the Cruz Inn Car Show, Famous Dave’
s Fire works, July Jubilee in Winter, the Hayward Fly In Pancake
Feed, the Sawyer County Fair, Cable Fall Fest, Hayward Fall Fest
and the Cranberry Fest in Stone Lake. There was also an
informational mailing to our members which they generously
responded to with their support. We thank Spider Lake Café for
selling the raffle tickets for us as well as the Thrift Shop
Volunteers. Please take a moment to thank all the generous
donors and supporters that provided our fabulous prizes.
The Help Save A Pet Super Raffle is an important part of our
budget. We are faced with a budget of about $205,000 this year.
All the monies go to the care of the animals, the maintenance of the
shelter and staff. All administrative, fund raising efforts, office
management and building care are handled by volunteers.
The Northwoods Humane Society will serve over 600 animals this
year. All animals are spayed or neuter, vaccinated, fecal checked
and wormed and given any needed medical care. They are
socialized and nurtured until that ‘forever’ home is found.
Euthanization is only done is cases of aggression, terminal illness
or if the health of the animal is a threat to the health of the other
animals at the shelter such as parvo. NHS receives no money
from any local, state or federal government. Monies come from
memberships, donations, memorial gifts, bequests thru wills, our
thrift shop located on Main Street in Hayward and fund raising
events. People who care about the well being of animals make the
Northwoods Humane Society work!
Also this past week saw two other wonderful events. Breanna
Rady and her father Bill have been raising pumpkin and squash.
On the past two Saturdays, Breanna and her friend Alyssa have
sold pumpkins and squash as well as some baked goods in front
of Art Beat for the Northwoods Humane Society. They even had
my dog Joy dressed as a pumpkin to help encourage sales.
The first Sunday in October First Luther Church and the Church of
the Ascension held a joint Blessing of the Animals at First
Lutheran Church in Hayward. It was very - special animals of all
sizes and all ages.
Some in excellent health and others are facing health challenges.
Owners came from different parts of our community. There was a
very special connection for all us of there. Alecia Austin had treats
for man and beast. Some had hot pink paw prints on them.
As we move into fall, we can all take a deep breath and know that
we did the very best we could in terms of fund raising for this year
and we know that next year is very far away.
The shelter staff we will continue to care for the animals in need –
that is an every day task with no break. We still have many, many
cats waiting for homes and dogs of all sizes. We invite the public
to come and walk dogs on these beautiful fall days and rain or
shine the cats love having someone hold them in their lap.
