" Cruelty to dumb animals is one of the distinguishing vices of low and
base minds. Wherever it is found, it is a certain mark of ignorance and
meanness; a mark which all the external advantages of wealth, splendour,
and nobility, cannot obliterate. It is consistent neither with learning nor
true civility.
--William Jones (1726-1800)

                          The NHS Thrift Shop

The Thrift Shop is located on Main Street in Hayward. Look when you go by and you'll see
our signs in the windows. All items for sale have been donated by generous members
and friends and there is something new every week! We never know what we'll have
next. Due to space limitations we do need to confine ourselves to smaller items but the
variety is outstanding. Our wonderful volunteer crew spends countless hours every week
hauling, sorting, cleaning and pricing the array of offerings. From the volunteer
coordinator to the sales staff to the great guys who move from our storage area into the
store every week this is one hard working crew!

Our little store is filled to capacity !We don't have a huge
space to work with but our volunteers make the most of it
and are constantly juggling items to make room for new
merchandise while maintaining order....no small task.
This has been a very important fund raising project from
the day it opened and there is no way we can ever
adequately thank all those whose efforts make it work.

It's a great combination of muscle and brain that keeps this little store fresh and fun for
our customers. People are very generous in donating nice items for sale and they
constantly surprise us with unique and beautiful things to fill our shelves. They are part of
the team too and we thank everyone for their help.

Sis Hale, a fabulous person in so many ways, started her own fundraising event for NHS
by baking her famous dog cookies and selling them at the NHS Thrift Shop.  The demand
has been huge and she can’t keep up and wonders if there are others that would like to
help do some baking?  I have included her recipe below.  The cookies can be frozen so
we can bring them out when needed and she bags them in paw print bags.

Dog Treats: 3 Cups of Flour, 3 Cups of Oatmeal, ¼ Cup Oil, ¼ Cup Molasses or 1/4c Honey,
2  Eggs, 2 Cups of Peanut Butter, 1 Cup Liquid (milk or powder milk and water)
Mix well.  Will be stiff, use a jelly roll type pan or a cookie sheet with sides.  About 10 ½ x
15 ½.  Roll these out with a small pizza roller, score them with a pizza cutter before
baking.  Bake 300 degrees for 1 hour then break them up.  Put them back in at 200
degrees for another hour.

 How to Donate Items

Would you like to volunteer at the Thrift Shop?

This cat seems to be researching the workings of the
window next to one of the shelves that were built for
relaxing and dozing in the sun. When you have a large
population of adult cats you need plenty of resting, hiding
and perching spots to go around. We find that most of our
cats get along with everyone but you know how it goes....
there can be a trouble maker in any crowd!
